Newport, Rhode Island — Eight races, a building breeze and a leaderboard that changed significantly by the end of the day made Day 2 of the Resolute Cup another demanding test for the 23 teams competing in Newport.

Corinthian Yacht Club moved into the overall lead after 12 races, taking a two-point advantage over Eastern Yacht Club. Bayview Yacht Club sits third, while San Diego Yacht Club made one of the biggest moves of the day, climbing from eighth to fourth and moving within four points of the lead.
Annapolis Yacht Club also made a strong jump, moving from 10th after the opening day to fifth overall.
The fleet sailed in a southerly that gradually built through the morning, reaching around 15 knots in the afternoon. After the third race, the race committee was forced to move the course because of a NOAA research vessel operating in the area. The new course, positioned near Jamestown, brought a different tactical challenge, with more shifts and pressure changes across the race track.
“We shifted to the Jamestown course. It’s a lot puffier and shiftier,” said Corinthian skipper Wade Waddell. “It’s a lot more about playing the shifts and being able to tack and sail the shifts.”

With the top 12 teams set to advance to the double-point medal races on the final day, the battle remains wide open. Annapolis, currently fifth, is separated from the boats around it by only a handful of points, while Lakewood Yacht Club sits on the qualification line.
For the teams, however, the challenge is not only tactical.
“These are really long days, and everything has to come together for you,” said San Diego skipper Adam Roberts. “You need to get a good night’s rest and then make sure you’re getting enough energy out there on the water, with food and water, and just doing your best to stay as focused as you can.”
Another full day of racing is expected before the fleet is split for Saturday’s double-point medal races.
With only two points separating the top two teams, the Resolute Cup is heading into its decisive stage with little room for error.
