Haroldo Solberg didn’t win the J/70 World Championship at Clube Naval de Cascais by winning the last race. He won it by finishing 21st in it, and making sure the one sailor who mattered finished further back still.
Sailing the boat OCEANPACT-Viking with crew Mario Tinoco, Gabriel Silva and Carlos Robles, the Brazilian skipper went into the final day of the ten-race series with a narrow lead over American rival John Heaton. A 13th-place finish in the penultimate race left the two teams locked together with everything still to decide in the last start. Rather than chase a result of his own, Solberg spent the final race matching Heaton move for move, controlling his closest rival instead of the fleet. It worked: Solberg crossed 21st, Heaton finished worse, and Brazil had its J/70 World Champion.
Spain’s Luis Bugallo Arriola took the outright silver, and also collected the J/70 Corinthian World Championship, the title reserved for amateur crews sailing without financial backing or personal sponsorship, adding a second trophy to an already strong week in Portugal.
More than 100 boats from over two dozen nations lined up at Clube Naval de Cascais for the series, a field that size making the final day’s match-racing-within-a-fleet-race even more pointed: with a hundred other boats on the same racecourse, Solberg’s real job on the last afternoon was never about the racecourse at large. It was about staying close enough to one other boat, for one more race, to make sure the previous nine had meant something.
